I live very near Lake Ontario and it has a warming effect in the fall. It also has a cooling effect in the spring 😦
I bought a Nikon Coolpix on Amazon in an attempt to motivate me to leave the house more often 🙂

Still green with the camera operation or the vegetation is still green? LOL. I live near Lake Ontario also and am really enjoying this fall’s pretty spectacular display of reds, golds and oranges. I finally bought a necessary new camera as well and I must say, all these new fangled features are pretty overwhelming.

Both! We haven’t had any color change in the trees in my neighborhood. If you head south the trees are in full color. I read somewhere this week the fall colors had peaked and and I said not here! Yes, green with the camera too. It has many features and I know it will take me a while to take advantage of them all. I’m just happy I was able to point and shoot a picture today!

Hehe, may I but in here, with photographic advice? Keep calm, Tree (and Sparkhouse, in case you are reading this) – it is perfectly normal to struggle with a new camera. I did, too, when I bought “Marky Mark”, my now beloved camera. Here’s the thing: You *need* to sit down and study the manual. Yes, I know it sounds daunting, but this is what you do: Take your camera, have a glass (or bottle) of wine handy, and read your manual from beginning to end. Along the way, test all the buttons and functions they are explaining to you. From the comfort of your armchair. The point of that is to familiarise yourself with the various buttons and settings. Try it all out. You can’t do anything wrong – after all you can erase all pictures afterwards. And then go out and shoot, shoot, shoot. If you can, try out manual settings, see how photography works, in general – try shooting close up with a large aperture and a small aperture, try shooting movement with a slow shutter speed and with a fast shutter speed. And try different zooms.
Oh, and if you have questions, ask me 🙂 Enjoy it all – photography makes you see the world completely different…

Thanks! I will read the manual per your instructions. You may be sorry you made the offer about questions 😉

😀 Great!!! Don’t be discouraged by the dry wording in the manual. Patience and practice will do it! And I am fully prepared to answer questions. Gladly. 😀

I reiterate what Richardtreehouse said…you may be sorry you offered! Read the manual?! I’m one of those ‘jump right in there without a clue of what you’re doing and wonder why you suck at it’ kind of people. LOL. But I think in this case I will follow your advice and actually do as you suggest, maybe even with some wine! Free up the inhibitions. That is my goal..to understand and master the manual settings. Thanks Guylty!

Oh Sparkhouse, I know, I know. You should’ve seen my face when I unpacked my big camera – and saw the telephone directory-size manual that came with it. Sour is an understatement. But I followed the advice that a photo lecturer had given me years before – and it was good. Even though I didn’t understand all settings and workings of the camera at first attempt, at least it meant I became familiar with the buttons. It really is important to know what the buttons mean and how to operate the settigs via the little screen. Don’t feel discouraged – it helps you in the long run!!!

I like the part about the wine. Can I just have a glass of wine without the camera?

As Guilty already said: take your time to read the manual – and with a little patience, it will be just fine. What kind of Nikon coolpix is it? I used to have one (old one) but I usually take my Canon reflex 1000D (which is getting a bit old, too).
Love your green 🙂

Thanks! Reading the manual is definitely a priority. The camera is a Coolpix S360. It seemed like the best one in my price range. I researched for a couple of days so I hope I’m right 🙂
I’m going to try and get to the lake today (Lake Ontario) and get a few shots. As Guylty said that is the beauty of a digital. I can take lots of shots and just discard the duds 😉

*I* happen to have a Nikon Coolpix. The cheapest one, though, that you buy at Walmart, LOL.

I’m amazed that it’s still so green — would not have guessed that at this point. I miss The North sometimes.
